Which HP printer? Do you have it connected through a network, or a
direct connection?
immediately after posting my question it suddenly occurred to me that
maybe a reinstall of the Classic printing software might fix things,
and it did! (Why it went wrong in the first place is another matter,
since I certainly never *removed* any of that stuff).
HP's Mac drivers are fragile beasts. I have an HP all-in-one printer
that is connected to a wireless network. For the first six months I
had it, every time I restarted the computer after doing a software
update, I would have to uninstall and then reinstall the HP software in
OSX, to get the scanner feature working again. They finally updated the
drivers a few months ago. At least twice it has quit speaking to the
machine running OS 9.2.2, and I had to reinstall the Classic printing
software to fix it.
Sigh... HP "used" to make some pretty good Mac compatible printers. I
have an old HP660 DeskWriter that still runs like a top, connected to a
9600.
