That is an IE thing. Best approach would be to stop using IE! :)
Short of that, I seem to vaguely recall a preference in IE for
automatically updating subscription... ah, yes, it's in the
Preferences. Click "Subscriptions" on the left. Then change the
"Check For Changed Sites" preference to "Manually".
