Eric--I am not sure if I can help you but I was faced with the same
problem--except I have a 50 year collection. I bought an Epson 4870 Pro
scanner which does a beautiful job. It is a slow process but I end up
with great images and am very happy.
Epson now has a newer model so the 4870 might be available for less$.
The reviews in Shutterbug magazine were very good--check them out.
