Mine did this as well.  The drive was installed after the panther install,
so the DVD player wasn't on the system.  I used Pacifist to install the
DVD player app and it did work, but later on it started crashing right
after I tried to start it (think it may have been related to me breaking
the ATI drivers).  But it works fine with the clean tiger install I did.
