What are the advantages of creating separate partitions for apps and data in OS X? Is there any? It all runs off the same drive, I could see if I had an OS drive and a data drive, but even then can I put the swap partition on a different drive? Just curious more than anything, thanks!

Mike, as both Bruce and Dan pointed out, there are pros and cons. I myself got into the habit of separate partitions working on Wintel machines. I used to run a lot of different OS's and it made for changing from one to another much easier. Plus if something happened to the boot partition, it was a simple task to reinstall whatever version of Windows without seriously affecting my data. Since I got into Mac's, I've more or less given up the practice as it just isn't as necessary. Plus I now have a fileserver on my network and keep most of my truly valuable data there. YMMV

Just a message from Doug...
