I found it! Difficult to see with 3 PCI cards installed! Battery out for days, box unplugged for days, ready to see if OS9 will start up again as the OSX 10.2 install disk had killed it in an instant. Worked fine until I (reluctantly) tried to install X. Just inserting the disk did the deadly deed. Will work through advice already received on X installation and report back. Many thanks everyone for all the excellent information and advice.
