Someone sent me this by mistake, thinking i was the one having trouble. So i'm reposting it for the guy that needs it.

:)

Your problem with the G3 B&W OS install and update file corruption is caused by the Rev. 1 logic board IDE controller. Your 120GB drive is too large for the controller to handle, and even if you got it to accept an OS install, it would corrupt the file structure very quickly. This problem is the major reason for the introduction of the Rev. 2 logic board.

You have three choices: Run with a 20GB or smaller drive, Upgrade the logic board to a Rev. 2, or purchase a third party PCI ATA100 or ATA133 IDE controller card.

20GB drives must be tested because some manufacturers/models will not run without corruption on the Rev. 1 logic board controller. This is a tedious method for finding a compatibile drive.

IF you can find a Rev. 2 logic board for $60-$110, this will fix your problem since Rev. 2 logic boards have an improved IDE controller that does not have the corruption problem. However, you will be limited to drives smaller than 128GB.

The PCI ATA IDE controller cards from Acard AEC-6280M and AEC-6885M, as well as the Sonnet Tempo are reasonably priced, and will also allow you to run hard drives larger than 128GB. They have two channels, with two drives per channel capability. These cards cost from $55-$85, and are readily available from OWC, Newegg or the manufacturers.

If you decide to buy a third party controller (the easiest, cheapest and best solution), you can also get a PCI SATA/150 controller from the same manufacturers which would allow you to run SATA drives as well. You would, of course, have to buy SATA drives.

Anyway, sorry for the bad news re G3 B&W Rev. 1 logic boards, but at least you now know there is a more than acceptable workaround. The PCI ATA133 controllers and PCI SATA controllers are both twice as fast than the built-in logic board IDE controller.

Hope that helps.

lol, I swapped a Dual P3 1GHz (dual 1GHz CPU's) plus RAID, 1GB RAM, etc for my BnW. Pretty unfair trade considering that dual P3 was a nice machine and much faster than this, but I wanted a Mac.

I second that. I got this Powermac when i had a little money come my way. There's no way i could afford another now. I'd love a Pismo, but it's just the cost. If i knew someone willing to swap one for my PIII laptop, then i'd jump at the offer.

My opinion exactly, I LOVE the OS. I just wish Macs were cheaper. :)

Hi there

I have a G4 500 with just under 400mb ram. I'm using MX2004 and photoshop CS.

Okay, my 64Bit Amd blasts this machine out of the water. But OSX is such an easy os to use, i can live with it being a couple of seconds slower. I've considered over clocking to 600mhz, but why? It's running ok and i don't want to hurt my B/W.

I started using mine for web dev too, but it's still to slow. Dreamweaver runs much quicker on my Athlon64 lappie. 500MHz G4 is on its way though so maybe it will be quick enough. I can deal with a little slower but I don't really use this laptop for too much gaming, saving up for a nice 3500+ rig for that :) How fast is your BnW and what are you using to dev? MX2004,
Photoshop, etc?

Aye, my apologies. The B/W doesn't read 512mb as 512mb as the others
have stated. Was my mistake, for some reason i was thinking of the B/W
maximum ram ability, not what sticks you had to use to get you there
LOL

The data corruption was something i encountered on first getting my
B/W. I wanted to install another larger drive. But after reading as
length about it. Decided to ditch the 10gb and install a 40gb. So far
it has served me well. But i would never install a second drive on the
primary IDE bus. After the things i've heard. It's wiser to buy a
faster PCI 133 ATA card and get a nice speedy ATA 133 drive installed.

I have a Mac Edition PCI Radeon 32MB video card and it's just great!
Much better then the ATI Rage i had.

I hope you get your B/W fixed, they are a fun machine..Look great and
for the age, run really well in OSX.

I have a AMD 64Bit XP3000 system for gaming. I used to use it for web
design, but the mac took over. Much easier to use. All Hail in the
presence of Mac!
