As a matter of personal experience, I did it once successfully
following the instructions in an old issue of MacAddict (well, not
too old). Then I tried it and had a total system failure also.
The BEST way is just to create a new user account and assign admin
privileges to it. Move over your old files, fix permissions and
delete the unwanted shortname. Easiest and safest.

Before you try this, do your homework. That shortname is used by
the Unix underpinnings; it's glued to your file ownerships etc.
Search Apple's kbase for details.
Then, I think there's a script called ChangeShortName, available
via versiontracker, that will help automate the process.
