How can I write in Word so he can open it in Works, since it does

I could be wrong, but I believe that the only way is for your friend
to first start-up his "Works" application and then go to the "File"
menu and select open from with-in "Works" and select the document
that he/she wants to open. However once the document is opened make
sure that your friend saves the document in the "Works" format or
they will have the same deal to go through the next time that they
want to open the same doc.
Or just save it as a rtf or txt document.

This is always an option, however be aware that it still will not open
in "Works" by just clicking on the document, and a save in txt will
loose all of the formatting, and a save in rtf will loose most of the
formatting.
