Thanks for the suggestions.
Tried
1) resetting PRAM with Option-Control-P-R at start up.
Nothing, just the pong.
2) tested what I presume is the PRAM battery. Full 3.6v
3) Tried booting from CD: same symptoms
4) Different video card: have to wait on that one.
5) secure seat of existing video card: no change
5) HD connections: HD is not secured and was not during shipping.
Could be big part of the problem.
Also, heat sink was rattling around.
Dan, I looked at the xlr8 site. They suggested that reseating the
VRegModule and ROM Dimm, but I don't seen anything like what they
illustrate on this MO.
Display ?: I bought a B&W display and I'm wondering if I power it
all by itself if I should get anything other than a black screen.
Thank you.
Cliff
Reset PRAM.
Buy a new PRAM battery.
Try booting from a CD.
Try a different video card.

Subject: [G] B&W Booting problem.
I'm just now getting to trying to boot
a B&W 350 rev 1
purchased on Lem Swap List.
One of those bad deals that precipitated the list closing.
I get the Apple tone but nothing comes on the screen
and it doesn't seem like the HD is activating.
To start the HD is plugged into P5 in a chain of plugs P2, P4 & P5
Sscondly the Rage card may not be seated properly.
The back "wall" seems bent slightly so the Rage card (video care I guess)
can be pressed in a little tighter. Though if I do this manually when booting
it doesn't make any difference.
Just want to make sure that this is toast and that there's no
change of a simple fix to get a boot.
All advice is of course appreciated.

Rev 1: The start up IDE drive should be mounted to the back of the
machine and connected to the LB directly from there. (don't know
which P it is). There should be no other drives connected to it.
Other suggestions which you may have already tried:
Reset PRAM.
Buy a new PRAM battery.
Try booting from a CD.
Try a different video card.

Familiarize yourself of the ins and outs of rev 1.

Upon receiving any used computer, I strongly advise opening it up and
reseating all the pci cards. Apple's PCI design isn't as sturdy as
it could be.
Since you're getting a bong, the processor, ROM, and RAM are probably working.
If the monitor screen isn't doing anything, then the video init may
be failing (your suspicion that the Rage card needs seating).
Note that if the system wasn't shipped with its original Mac OS CDs,
then the HD should have been wiped.
Try booting from your Mac OS CD.
