You may not have noticed, but when you do a Finder search in 10.4.x,
it never finds email messages (Mail.app) nor vcards (Address Book).
This is because the Finder inserts criteria into your search to
prevent it from finding such items! Why, I don't know, but there it
is. To see this, do a search and save as a smart folder. Then drag
the smart "folder" onto a text editor. In the raw query you'll see
two criteria you didn't specify, one prevents Mail.app mail messages
from matching and the other prevents vcards from matching.
Incidentally, the "default_smart.plist" file within the Finder bundle
does *not* contain these criteria - they are getting adding by the
Finder via code.
So... I figured out hack to prevent it from adding these criteria,
and this means you end up getting mail and vcard matches in Finder
searches! I've detailed it on the following web page. Note that this
is a true hack and is not for the feint of heart. However I've done
it and it works fine in 10.4.1 on my systems. It should work in
10.4.0 as well, but I didn't test that. See:

Once applied mail messages and vcards do match, show up in Mail
Messages and Contacts categories respectively, and they are displayed
nicely - for example mail messages show their title, not the filename
(which is cryptic). So why do they block these matches? Maybe it's an
accidental leftover. I don't know.
