And you're right - once the first backup is written, I could certainly do incremental backups to removable media. But I have no idea where you get DVD-Rs for that price. The Apple Store charged $8 for 5 DVD-Rs last time I bought them. At that price, I don't go through them very often.
First DVD+R pack purchase for me today, 25 TDK DVD+R were 12.97 from Circuit City. Finally, I can get my entire photo collection on one data backup.
I know there are supposed to be brand differences etc. but I'm just playing at this time to see how the thing works. DVD-R were cheaper but IIRC the -R is less compatible with household DVD players. I had read reviews a while ago but don't recall details of brands etc.
About optical media as backups, CD-RW isn't very permanent, the dye shifts over time, less of a shift usually occurs with CD-R. There are reviews out there about longevity of different dyes in the different colors of CD-R media; I do not recall which was best by technical name but IIRC it's the gold color, opaque rather than see- through is a good thing especially if you need it to be readable as a data disk on older systems (Mac or Win). Dye properties make the disk readable/unreadable by older lasers so choice of media can be important.
I have a case of old Kodak Gold CD-R that I got way back when that work on just about every drive (old or new) and I use them sparingly, the new disks can be hit and miss on my older CPUs.
Incremental backups with Retrospect to HD are nice (Retrospect is usually available very cheap at OWC Clearance page). External HDs are pretty cheap and easy, plus it's good to take one to a separate site from your main setup.
