Ok Gents, I got the answer I was looking for. Please calm yourselves down.
It's true that the G85 doesn't have an ether port, though that might not have been known since I didn't give that spec. I have plenty of ether hubs around to use if that was a possibility. Unfortunately, I don't think it is because the printer would have no IP address and no clue what to do with a signal coming across an ether-to-usb converter. (unless the converter itself could be assigned an IP, which I doubt, and in which case it would probably qualify as a printer server).
Looks like I'll be using printer sharing after all. None of us want to get up and throw the switch every time we want to print. There's a very distant possibility that I'd use a printer server, but we don't really do enough printing in our office to justify having such a device on all/enough of the timel, even though they appear to be reasonably inexpensive.
