To clarify, they *can* be connected and disconnected while the computer is asleep without problem, it will just wake up your Mac. If you are using a laptop and it is closed, it will wake up briefly when connected/disconnected, but then will shortly go back to sleep. Of course if you are disconnecting a flash drive or hard drive, then it must have been unmounted(i.e. dragged to the trash, which in OS X turns into an eject icon) before so that there is no data loss or corruption, just the same as for when the system is awake.
