First -- Ya'all gotta stop rebuilding that desktop for the heck of it.
The desktop contains two things:
1) Copies of the icons supplied by your installed apps.
(used for file/window display)
and
2) A map of which creator codes belong to which apps.
(used to determine which app to launch)
If your icons look ok, and the right app is being launched when you
double-click, then rebuilding the desktop IS A WASTE OF TIME.
If your icons are messed up, or the wrong app is launching, then
rebuild your desktop this way:
1) Remove everything from the Startup Items folder.
2) Normally restart your Mac (Special/Restart).
3) Hold both the cmd and option keys down until you see the rebuiding
dialogs from the Finder.
Next -- command-control-restart ???
Was your Mac hung or frozen when you did this?
This is the equivalent of intentionally stopping your car by dropping
the clutch while your heavy foot is on the gas pedal, instead of
turning off the ignition key.
It is a raw forced reboot. Currently in-progress i/o is NOT
finished. The disk caches are NOT written out to disk. That means
you LOOSE DATA.
Always restart and shutdown your machine in an orderly fashion, if you can.
