I want something that can be plugged into the sound out on
the computer and produce a reasonable reproduction of my
MP3's and internet radio in the great outdoors.

Great subject. With a batt. pack/inverter you might run Airport
Express and a powered speaker set using AirTunes. (or direct
from iPod). I'd compare this to the fidelity of wireless speakers.
Cambridge sells a dual source batt./AC powered 3-piece set
around $70 - work OK if area not too big. At least they emulate
a rock and you'd get much more stereo separation than
extravagantly priced boom boxes sold into the iPod space.
There are also Griffin units to run analog speakers from your
'Book but you need copper wire and AC both.
