To drop back into OS-9, restart the computer while holding down the D
key, and keep holding it until you see the little smiley icon that
means 9 is starting up. Then to boot back into 10, just restart again
without touching the keyboard.
If you set 9 to start up in OS-X Preferences, then you will have to
change the startup disk back to 10 later on, or you will keep booting
into 9. The D-key trick makes it easier to just drop back into 9
occasionally without messing with any prefs or startup disk settings.

Note: You _have_ to boot into native OS 9, you _cannot_ run the update

Really? How do I boot into OS 9 (I have _never_ done that since I
installed Panther over a year ago)?
All the best,
