Well, after the 10th or so freezeup, I decided to check the secondary HD from within OS9 (which has NO problems with this 17" monitor, or my 13" ones) using Disk First Aid. Unfortunately, it came up with problems which First Aid couldn't fix, so I simply selected to erase the secondary HD, and am reinstalling 10.2 onto it as we speak. I doubt that I'll update the OS much, maybe just to 10.2.6 as has been suggested. First, I'll see how well 10.2 behaves without any major updates.

Hmmm. I've had problems with the monitor going black during a 10.2 install on just about every beige I've tried (5 machines, multiple hard drives) UNLESS i put in a stripped down version: No extra fonts, no additional languages, no printers, nothing but BSD and stuffit expander. I'm using them as servers, so I don't really need any of that stuff anyway. It seems to hang (for me) when it tries to go to Disk 2.

I don't know how easy it is to add that stuff back in after doing a basic install, but if it's like any other OS installation it would be a minor thing to do.

I've also had no luck using a small monitor with any X install (I can't say I've tried too hard) so I only use my one remaining 15" for OS 9 and earlier machines.

As is probably obvious by now, YMMV.
