I have a beige G3 with a 500MHz Sonnet G4, 4 HD's (2-ATA's and 2-SCSI) and a
combo drive. I also have two external SCSI drives but I don't think that
effects the Mac's power supply much if any. The floppy's been removed. The
RAM and PCI slots are fully populated (768MB, Pro Tools audio card, Rage
Orion and Atto OEM SCSI card). I also have MIDI hanging off both serial
ports, 3 ADB devices and driving 2 monitors. I've had it set up like this
for a couple of years and have had no heat or power supply issues.

I did have to get a 1-to-2 power adapter to install the 4th hard drive since
there were only four and I needed five.

I believe that the newer the hard drives are the less impact they have on
the PS. Older hard drives require more power than newer ones.
