The 'Domesticated mac' reminds me of something that would get up and run around the room in the movie "Beetlejuice" for some reason.
The iMac G5 is similar, but to my eye that's much more clearly a giant mutant iPod on a LCD display stand..I don't think there's more than a very distant relationship.
The design folks then and the design folks now are almost an entirely different team.
Too bad we didn't have a real 'Twentieth Anniversary Mac', ie a model to celebrate 20 years of Macs, not just Apple; in many ways, though, the TAM is emblematic of that era in Apple's history, which spewed out so many different products and technologies and never quite had control of all of them. All you can think about in the late 90's is: '7,564 different Performa models'
Today we've crept back up to multiple lines and multiple options in each line, but it's not close to even existing manufacturers, much less the excesses of the Performa Age.
