I don't think the loss of altivec will be any biggie. Intel has sse3, which
maybe theoretically isn't as good, but in practice seems to boost speed
about the same as altivec.
And I think Steve went with intel because they can provide everything apple
needs, chipwise, whereas amd can't.
And keep remembering that the chips apple uses aren't going to be the ones
available now. The next year for freescale and ibm don't look so awesome
re: what apple needs. But intels next year looks real good.
I don't buy the argument about giving toshiba and sony the cell processor,
as apple has said for quite a while that it is not suitable for desktop
computing. I can see the xbox figuring in though. kj.
