Yes, since you have a Sawtooth you're able to boot from a FW device. 
All new-world Macs with an AGP slot (thus excluding the B&W G3 and 
Yikes G4), and slot-loading iMacs and later models can boot from USB 
and FW devices. Unfortunately I have a B&W G3...

 From what I heard there's a possibility to use a third-party utility 
called XPostFacto (which is usually used to install Panther on beige 
G3s) to allow me to boot from a FW device, but since my B&W G3 is also 
my server I cannot afford to mock it up.

Usually you just install the OS on your internal HD and then clone it 
to your FW HD. I have no experience with cloning, but IIRC Carbon Copy 
Cloner (bombich.com) and SuperDuper are apps that can do that. Perhaps 
some other listers can be more specific?
After you've cloned your HD you have two bootable systems, hold the 
Option aka Alt key at boot to select the other bootable system to boot 
off.
