If you are plannng a recording studio, a good little mixer with mic
inputs would
be a very good idea. There are mixers that have usb outputs, but a
simple mixer
with line level analog outputs to the iMic would probably be ok too.
I'm not as up on current equipment as I'd like to be, but I know that
there are
lots of mics out there with different levels of output, dynamic and
condenser,
not to mention professional mics that require phantom power from the
mixer.
With a mic preamp, or better, a mixer that has mic inputs (which is
essentially
an adjustable mic preamp with lots of other features) you can adjust
the mic
output to the best level required by the analog digital converter, like
the
iMic.
Trusting the mic preamp in a gadget like the iMic is a bit of a
crapshoot, might
be good, might not. Earlier Macs that had mic inputs (mono only) had
mic
preamps that were not of pro quality. I prefer not to trust onboard
mic inputs
unless there is no other choice.
You might get lucky with a mic and the onboard mic preamp and have a
match that
works. But with an outboard preamp, especially a nice mixer, you are
sure and
have control.
And yes, lots of audio programs have controls that will de-ess or
correct
booming or popping. These work but there is always a degredation in
quality
and it takes a lot of experience to use them well. It is far better
not to
record defects in the first place. Get your mic, mic placement and the
rest of
it in good shape first.
Hope this helps,
