Logistically though a forum makes more sense and would probably attract more Mac users. Just a thought. We could always have both :)
I have to say that I'm too busy/lazy to log into a forum on a regular basis unless there's a specific project I'm working on which requires it. I am on quite a few lists and also have accounts on a bunch of forums (both usually specific to software packages or hardware, or to my niche market of alternative construction) and I run lists and forums myself.
I'll take a list over a forum any day. The messages come to me - I don't have to go out of my way to go to them. I know others with the same attitude.
If it wasn't for the email notification of followup posts on most of them, I'd be even more annoyed with forums.
There is a mod available (possibly still in beta) for phpBB forums called M2F (Mail to Forum) which theoretically allows you to integrate list functions with a forum. I haven't had time to set it up and test it yet, but if it works it would be the ideal solution to the split opinions between forums and lists - get both in one package, and let the user decide which format they prefer. I suspect it's a bit of a challenge to develop a package like that, but I also suspect that you'll see more forum packages begin to integrate similar features as time rolls on.
