I've had some experience with HP PSC printers and you are correct,
they are a royal pain and SUPER SLOW using the HP drivers provided on
Mac OS install CD/DVD's or downloaded from HP. The HP software also
has memory leaks and runs in background so it can eat up all your
memory over time, and also hog the whole CPU eventually.
I've had the best luck by uninstalling all the HP stuff completely
from my systems and using the GIMP print drivers. They say that the
HPIJS drivers also work and have slightly better quality, but they're
slower to print for me also, so it's a trade-off.
The Linux people say your printer works fine with both GIMP and
HPIJS, but you may need some help configuring (will apply to OS X
setup also), see:

You may be able to get the scanner to scan using the SANE (Scanning
Access Now Easy) open source scanner software. It probably works best
as a TWAIN plugin from within another application like Photoshop or
Graphic Converter. Here's a link:

Hopefully this free open source software can save your lowly printer.
It's not been perfect for me, but at least it can print multiple
pages per minute, rather than taking multiple minutes per page, which
was the best the HP software could muster - literally 5+ minutes per
page!
