So long as you've got a VGA output, a monitor is a monitor is a monitor, until you get into really high end stuff.

The key is having VGA output on your video card. DVI can be adapted with a cheap adaptor, but if you have ADC it's much more expensive.

That said, I'm starting to see 15" and 17" LCD's for cheap, too. IMO it's better to spend some more money up front and get a nice monitor and your desk back. Geeks.com has a nice 17" one for $179. That's equivalent to a 19" CRT.
