Well, I reinserted the personality card, unplugged the Mac (didn't remove the PRAM battery, though), and held down CUDA button for five seconds. When I turned the Mac back on, I finally got the startup 'bong' I'd wanted to hear, but one of the hard drives sounded like it was undulating in speed constantly (emitting a rising high-pitched whine, stopping, then emitting another rising high-pitched whine, and so on). I reset it, then zapped the PRAM settings five times, and after that, the OS9 happy Mac icon came up for a split-second, then disappeared, and the computer proceeded to load OS X instead (as it had been doing shortly before the reset). Once again, I'm stumped. Any ideas? -Adam
