Had I seen this, prior to my last message, I would've asked, does the volume with OS 9 
show up in OS X...i.e. does that volume mount? If not, it's likely to be what Bill said. 
If possible, I'd try to backup as much data as I can, from that volume before it does the 
ol' "read/write head takes a dive into the data platters" bit. I still cringe 
to think about that sound...having had an HDD chew itself up, about 5 years ago.
