If it isn't chiming, something is loose or dead.  Assuming you
haven't fixed it with any of the easy things, reset your goal to just
getting it to chime.  A Mac that isn't chiming is either very sick or
has a bad or disconnected speaker.  :-)

Just FYI, I have a Sawtooth with the audio output going to an old mixing board, then to my Edirol professional monitors --

It's doesn't chime right now, but about 6 weeks ago, it chimed everyday at startup for about a week, then quit again..

Last year when I hooked it all up, it didn't chime, then about 4 months later, it chimed for maybe 5-6 startups, then quit until the time mentioned above.

Fixing permissions and trashing prefs has no apparent affect on it.

The sound _always_ works fine after startup. IOW, it usually doesn't chime, but sometimes. for several times in a row, it does, then quits again. I don't know why, but whatever the reason, it has no effect on anything after startup.
