I'm anything but sure on this one but here goes my two
cents worth...
I thinking that the 8.5 GB hard drive is too small for
a large (8 GB) partition that would be required.
today all drives are sold as a "such-n-such" hard
drive and most just end up being smaller - take my new
60GM hard drive for example - when you check the
system profile you find that this drive's capacity is
listed as 57.27 GB - to the marketing department that
equal to 60 GB!

I partitioned a 60G HD to install X.3 in my beige
MT
G3.
Now I'm trying to partition an 8.5G HD in an 8600
with
a G3 upgrade.
Where do I find the disk utility?
I have a 9.1, a 9.2.1, and the X.3 DVD set.
I was able to find the disk partition feature in the
OSX install procedure, and created the <8GB
partition
that might have been required for the OSX
installation.
However, the installation still keeps getting
finished
with the notation "There were errors in the
installation..."
What's that about?

FYI, all HDD's are listed in their unformatted capacity (raw) and once
the drive has been formatted the actual drive capacity is the capacity
of which the user can store data.
You will find out that if you format a HDD from within an Apple or a
WINTEL system that the formatted capacity will be different.
A good disk formatter, will also mark any portion of the platters that
have errors and there for shouldn't be available for use. The
information regarding bad blocks/sectors are stored in the IDE
(Integrated Drive Electronics)
