After turning off AppleTalk from OS X, and whatnot, I decided to try once again
to boot into OS9 from the Startup Disk menu. Amazingly, it actually managed to
make it past the Happy Mac this time, as well as the Ethernet icon, and booted
completely. QuarkXPress even works in native mode now (no idea what change made
that happen). Mozilla (wish they'd make a version of full-fledged Firefox for
OS9...) had some freezing problems, but a reinstall seems to have fixed that
(knock on wood). So far, so good. I will continue to keep my fingers crossed,
and hope that nothing else goes wrong. Addenum: here's an OS9-related issue
which has been bugging me for a little while. To save hard disk space, I've
burned several data CDs full of MP3s from my laptop (a Sony Vaio with roughly
six times the total HD capacity of this Mac!). In OS X, every single file on
the CDs show up. However, in OS9, only roughly half of them show up. Get Info
shows the CD as containing 695.5MB of files, yet in the folder view, only 61
show up, when there should be 119. What could be causing this?
