I have OS9.2 on my Rev 1 B&W G3/300, and with Classic software am
having problems with 3 websites now (eBay works still, but is partly

loses its interactive buttons, I am also having trouble with .pdf
files on the web not being recognized as such).
All of my software is Classic OS and I do NOT want to have to buy new
for OSX. However I would like to install OSX10.2 (I have a set of CDs
here) for use only for web work and just perhaps e-mail.
The B&W has 3 HDs and I want to keep the startup disc as OS9.2. So I
have a choice of 2 others, a 4gb IDE and a 9gb SCSI-wide.
Hi Andrew --
The brief answer is to just go ahead and install it (preferably on the
larger drive, X likes lots of HD space); after getting over the first
shock of adjustment you'll never look back. Especially on anything
related to the internet, it's an incomparably better OS.
But a bit more lengthily, "Classic" doesn't mean "pre-OSX Mac software"
as you seem to be using the term, it refers to a simulator built into
OS X that allows older software to run under that platform. It looks
like OS9 and feels like OS 9 but it's not *really* OS 9, which is why
older peripherals so commonly refuse to run under Classic, but demand a
restart in genuine unadulterated OS9 with no hint of X lurking about.
What you *can't* do is "keep the startup disc as OS9.2" but run OSX
browsers and email programs: to use X you have to boot up in X -- but
this probably won't pose any problems, because as long as you have 9.2
installed somewhere on the computer the above mentioned simulator will
permit you to continue to run all your software; in fact if you set
Classic preferences to have Classic (OS9) launch at startup you won't
even have to wait to get going.
Best,
Victoria
