Just a quick one

Do ATA cables have a 'direction' i.e. Can they be fitted either way
round?
Andy

BTW my old printer used to be called "Lotty the LaserWriter"

Nope, no direction at all. I've reversed etc.....

And the connectors are keyed so that they will go on correctly.

Harry (*^_^*)

Well, usually. I have two ATA 133 cables with no tabs, and have had to make note of where on the drive the no. 1, 2 pins are. As far as I can remember, the 1, 2 pins on the hard drive connection have always been near the power socket side, with pins 39, 40 (always) facing the outside; perhaps a quick check on all your drives would bear this out? That would certainly be an
easy way to remember where they (pins 1, 2) are.

Best regards,
Dana

Dana, pin 1 has always been next to the power connector on every IDE/ATA drive I've used, probably well over 500 at last count, so I think it's safe to assume that it is always so. Looking at the pins (motherboard end or drive end), pin 1 will always be to the right of the slot where the tab on the cable end would go, if your cable has a tab. Pin 1 is usually silk screened on the motherboard, but not always.
