Thanks to all of you who wrote with your suggestions. Some of which
I've tried and many I have not.
Just to summarize:
The color is the same messed up look in OS 9 as OS X.
I have a new video card, but I will look at the software and see if I
have the latest. The video card people say the old card (original ATI
RAge 128 should work, but it has no firmware updates it's so old)
I have not removed the Sonnet Zif card, because it's such a pain in
the butt to redo all that, and I couldn't get it to run when I
installed it--a tech had to do it. But I will consider that if all
else fails.
I will look at prefs and color profiles, but since the system colors
(i.e. the finder window) has weird stuff too, I'm not so sure it's
just photoshop's problem. In iPhoto, the thumbnails are bad, but the
full size photos are fine...except for the photos that I've retouched
(months before the upgrade) in Photoshop. So it's any photos that
photoshop has touched, even before the upgrade, that look bad.
I, too, see the Adobe splash screens badly. Esp. the Acrobat splash
screen as one contributor mentioned.
So, the upshot is, I will try all the suggestions and if I solve it I
will report back to all these wonderful helpful people. Thanks to you
all!
Jennifer
