Thanks to everybody for your advice. I have downloaded the tester Nancy
recommended and have successfully tested the first of the four chips through 1000+ passes. I'm about to switch to the second one, and am curious. Do I need to disconnect all of the cables from the back of the machine each time I open it and switch chips? I'm using an anti-static wrist strap. (I know
this must sound lazy...)

People's opinions probably vary on this, but I always unplug everything before opening up the computer. At a minimum you should probably unplug the power cord.

I don't use a grounding strap except in the winter months. Our house has a lot of static electricity that time of year. Otherwise, I just touch the metal housing before touching sensitive parts.
