No. ATA drives are just as fast (you're bound by the 66Mhz bus speed
in the B&W anyway) and vastly cheaper and far less fiddly.
Gotta disagree with at least some of that, Bruce. The average user can
get performance somewhat comparable to SCSI systems from newer 7200
RPM+ ATA drives, but they're not truly "just as fast" as many folks
believe. The more demanding the load you put on your Mac, the more
you'll begin to appreciate Ultra SCSI (especially Ultra2 LVD). ATA's
definitely cheaper and some would consider escaping the pitfalls of
SCSI Voodoo a real blessing, to be sure....BUT working with SCSI isn't
always as problematic and terrifying as some folks seem to believe.
Also, the B&W's bus is 100 MHz. You may have had a temporary brain
cramp and been thinking of ATA/66, but even that's not particularly
relevant to the B&W....the drive bus is ATA/33. Maximizing B&W
performance pretty much necessitates adding a drive controller of some
kind; the only real question is which kind.

get a controller from someplace like Other World Computing <http://

you're good to go.
Then get that drive on sale at Frys, and you've got a setup for <
$200 that you would have to pay well near $1000 or more for in SCSI.
And that would be better (faster, I suppose?) than if I put that same
hard
drive in an enclosure that has both FireWire and USB2 connections?
Because I
priced enclosures the other day, and they cost about the same as that
card,
and the external drive would also be useful with my iBook. Or am I
missing
something?
An external case w/FireWire and USB 2.0 would be a very good choice.
However, to get the max from whichever drive you choose you'll almost
certainly need to add some flavor of PCI card:
(A) a drive controller if you focus primarily on internal. The
internal ATA/33 drive bus isn't terrible, but you'll notice the
performance boost with an upgrade to either ATA/100 (or 133) or Ultra
SCSI; or
(B) a FW/USB 2.0 card if you go external. While the B&W is equipped
with a FW module, you'll probably get better and more reliable
performance via PCI card - plus the added functionality of USB
2.0...more options is always a good thing.

And Joy. If you go external remember these three words FireWire,
FireWire, FireWire.
So people have been telling me, especially those who are primarily Mac
users. Is it because it's faster than USB, or more Mac-friendly, or
more
versatile, or does it work better in series?
Yes. 8^P
Seriously though, fast data transfer and versatility stand out for me.
