Now, I have just picked up an almost-new 120gb Maxtor DaimondMax Plus 9 ATA/133 HD for about $15US.

Can this be used as a direct replacement of the factory 6gb IDE, or will I need an ATA/133 controller card? Or do I run afoul of the supposed the slave-drive size limit?

Yes, you can use it without any issues. The size limit is for the IDE subsystem as a whole.

The slave IDE drive issue on rev 1 B&W's is there regardless of the size of the drive. It's not a size problem for a slave drive, it's the fact that a slave drive is present at all.
