We have a couple of G4 AGPs (with OSX) and a 9600 networked. Have so far used a 6500 (don't laugh!) as an AppleShare server for them. It's now well established that OS9 machines don't serve OSX well; slow and unstable connection, suddenly drops out.

Now we are offered a G3 300 with 320 Mb RAM, and I was thinking of using this as a server. Will it run OSX OK? What about the different revisions? As I understand it, the earlier ones came without onboard FireWire. Does that mean they can't run OSX without XpostFacto? Don't know yet what revision the offered Mac is

The 300mhz B&W should work fine with OSX, unless you're doing high end image processing stuff or huge amounts of serving. It won't be as snappy as your AGPs, but it'll do better than a beige as it has a faster bus speed. B&Ws don't need XPostFacto to install X.

I can't remember if the firmware upgrade will be needed in order to install OSX or to upgrade your processor above a certain level - I did both things on mine at about the same time. Someone here will certainly be able to address that.
