Some comments i often hear on this list have convinced me that i need to
write an email about the capabilities of older Macs. I have a sawtooth, with
640MB RAM at the moment, a 450MHz processor, and a Radeon 9200 with 128MB
VRAM. I am running Mac OS X.3.5. For a while, i was unhappy with OS X,
because
of extremely poor reliability I was having. Then I removed one of my DIMMs and
now everything runs great. The OS itself runs fast.
Now, I can run programs that claim to require an 800MHz, or even 1GHz g4
with NO problems. The newest version of photoshop ran FINE on my BEIGE 375MHz
G3, and much faster on my G4. I run x-plane, which models flight so well, I
can log flight hours using this program towards getting a pilots license.
The bottleneck for the internet is the connection, not the computer, so
my G4 is approximately the same speed as a dual 2.7GHz G5 when surfing the
internet.
Now, why are people complaining about bus speeds? even a beige g3s bus
speed is 533MB/s, and a blue g3s is 800MB/s. The 100MHz bus of my sawtooth is
128 bit, so that can do 1.6GB/s. Thats fast! the only reason you would need
a faster machine than 450MHz is if youre running a business and the extra hour
a day someone spends on their computer equates to $100 extra dollars spent
paying an employee a week, or $400 a month. so if you can rent a G5 for $200 a
month thats a good business investment.
Also, if you actually run a program that REQUIRES faster, then spend more
money on a faster system. But for me and probably MOST of the people on this
list, a blue g3 (or whatever) system works just fine. Notice, I run x-plane,
so i therefore got a video card with 128MB VRAM. This is why I will not own
a Mac Mini until I can get that much VRAM into one. If I wanted to use my
sawtooth as a network server, id spend my money on a scsi card, not a video
card.
And an old mac is perfect for a file server, since a network can only do
125MB/s if its a gig ethernet. and remember, the beiges bus can do 533MB/s.
NO
reason to get a faster system.

does this make sense?
