With most Comcast cable modems you actually don't need a router,
they use DHCP and can support up to 144 clients (not as many as a
router, but who would need that many anyway?)
Check with the modem and see, it works with my Motorola SurfBoard.

Yes, Comcast does support multiple IPs through the modem but last I
heard they charge for it. If you do it without arranging for it they
may not notice at first but when they do they hit you for back
payment.
This is based on a client who had multiple addresses and anecdotal
evidence gathered mostly on Low End Mac lists. It is also my
understanding that the specifics vary from location to location
depending on who Comcast bought out.

Thanks everyone. I feel fortified! I sent snippets from everyone's emails
(rendering them anonymous, of course). Now the little poopie butt will have
to get out of the way while mom and I get this house networked!
Appreciate the help. Coincidentally, I just got a Comcast cable modem
donated-now I can get her off of the rental fee too. Nice.
