For Harry and anyone else who questioned Disk Utility's and DiskWarrior's ability to monitor a drive. The warning I got from DW said "The hard drive's built-in S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics indicate a failure or pending failure that could result in loss of data." Before removing the failing Maxtor drive I ran TechTools Pro on it. It passed every test except item #10 of S.M.A.R.T. Self- Checking. That was the Spin Retry Count. It listed Normal: 219, Worst: 198, Threshold: 223, and Status: Failing!

That's a drive on it's way out. This is why we have SMART monitoring. We get a chance to get the data off before the final crash.
