In the Amiga operating system, the .inffo files are icons for other files.  The
portion of the file name before the .info is the name of the original file which
should also be in the directory.  It's sort of like the resource and extension
forks in the Mac system being in entirely different files.  Without a .info file
on the Amiga, the file will not appear on the desktop.  Different kinds of
files, i.e. data, app etc, have different flavor .info files associated with
them and they include other information such as where they should appear on the
desk top and what apps are required to run them.

The Amiga system prided itself on a cool graphic interface (ahead of its time
and in color from the beginning) and also the ability to be run from a cli, like
msdos.  Info files are not required when operating the machine from a cli
console.

This may be more than you wanted to know.  But we ex-Amiga addicts are like
that.
