The procedure shuts it down and starts it up (the little green light lights and the HD spins), but won't cause the familiar bong (or whatever Wallstreets
do) on startup.

 Phase two?

The "bong" means that the platform has passed the initial memory test, so if you don't hear the bong then the first place to look is the memory.

Paul,

I would agree with Harry in that it sounds like it might be a problem with your memory.

Not knowing if you have it, I am sending you a link off-list as to where to find the take apart manual for the Wallstreet.

A couple of other possibilities come to mind: (1) Have you tried booting from a system software CD? (2) It could be the PRAM battery. If you were having any problems with the computer losing track of the date and time, check the PRAM battery too. (3) It could also be the screen hinges. Were you having any problems with video before? Or, is the screen/lid sloppy or hard to open? If the screen hinges break, they can scrunch and poke the video cable. That is a fairly common problem in laptops. The sound cable is also in the area near the video cables, and it could be damaged. Even though you don't hear the bong, do you hear any pops and crackling noise out of the speaker? (4) Some laptops don't like having completely dead batteries. Have you tried removing the battery and just using the AC adapter?
