As for the restocking fee, keep on 'em about it...be persistent.
First, let me say that I agree with you that Dave should keep after
them. I have know Dave for a number of years from the SuperMac list.
I even suggested to him in a private email that he contact Larry (owner
of OWC, who's last name I can not think of right now) directly and
complain.
Consumers really need to start beating up retail outlets over this
totally BS restocking fee. OWC's not the only one to do it. The reason
they do it is, basically, we let them get away with it!
I am a retailer, and I have to say that restock fees are not BS.
Taking stuff back costs money. Online retailers pay somewhere around 5
to 7 percent of the total sales amount in credit card processing fees.
They pay them on the sales transaction AND the return transaction.
Opened, returned and used products can not be sold as "new" again.
They end up getting discounted and sold as "open box" or "system pulls"
or whatever that particular trade calls them.
Quite possibly retailers started charging restocking fees once they
realized that they were getting away with making the CONSUMER
responsible for shipping on an RMA.
I don't get a lot of returns, but more than half of what does come back
was not defective when it left. Customer abuse is usually the cause.
Then there are the folks who what to return things you didn't even
sell... Just a few minutes ago, I had a guy come in with a coffee pot
he bought in another shop, in another town, that stopped working. He
wanted to know if I would take it in trade for one of our pots. He
said he would be happy to pay the $20 price difference. Considering the
fact that I did not sell him the original pot, don't even sell that
brand so I have nobody I can return it to, and I paid more than $20 for
the coffee pot he wanted...I respectfully declined his generous offer.

My two favorite shopkeeper saying:
(1) Defective stuff escapes from the factory ever day.
(2) It is great being your own boss. You can work half days if you
want. You even get to pick which twelve hours.
