Two years ago I called 911 on our primary POTS line. I was
immediately connected to the emergency services people in Camden NJ --
several towns to the west of me. When I told the lady I was in Cherry
Hill, she quickly told me to call the Cherry Hill police directly,
then hung up.
I'll say again, as I've said before, when the 911 service operator asks
"where you are located," they are just wasting time, as their system
displays the phone company's registered address for that phone. This
information is provided by the "ANI" (Automatic Number Identification)
equipment that is located in the central office. This is the same
equipment that lets you make a long distance call without the operator
intervening and asking your number so that she can record it on the
call ticket. That intervention by the operator went out with the
"Cordboard system" which has been retired (in the USA) for many years.
The 911 system takes the number that was provided by the ANI equipment
and does a look-up in the data base of the information that you
provided the telephone company when you got your service. And since the
telephone company owns the wire plant that your POTS is connected to
they should know the correct address.
Your local telephone company has made a mistake and somehow has your
number in their data base as being located in Camden. You should call
your local service provider and ask them to correct the data base.
