Guess I need to try and summarize my experience with the UL2D a little
more clearly.
I'm currently using the Apple OEM version of the UL2D (only one
internal connector rather than two like the retail version) in my B&W
running 10.3.9; third such config I've set up. It's run flawlessly
with all flavors of 10.2 and 10.3, with Seagate 10K Cheetah LVD's
attached. I've heard more than one person on this and other lists
claim that data transfer drops to 10 MB/sec with 10.3 and later but I
noticed no such performance hit when moving from Jaguar to Panther,
and
the Apple Knowledge Base articles I've been able to find make no
reference to any such phenomenon.
I thought that Atto wasn't going to release a firmware update for OSX
and the UL2D. Did that change? What version of the firmware are
you using? Do you still have the Apple version installed? If so,
are disks on the Atto UL2D bootable?
Right - ATTO isn't supporting the UL2 series at all for use with OS X,
10.3 or later. I ran the latest firmware update I could find on ATTO's
site (v.1.6.4 IIRC) so Apple's firmware on the OEM card is history.
BTW, does anyone have a link for downloading the OEM firmware for this
card...? I've never had problems booting from drives on the UL2D in a
B&W....but Macs with Old World ROMs (especially Beige G3's) have been
more hit and miss.
A couple of questions if you please; I have an ATTO UL2D in my G4
Sawtooth.
What firmware version are you using and does it work in Classic?
I've run a lot of Classic apps (Photoshop, Illustrator, et al) via the
UL2D with no probs.
Because of my outdated software, I'm mostly stuck in OS 9 or Classic
on this
G4. Have you experienced any problems with either OS 9 or the Classic
startup
process with this card?
As noted above, no probs in Macs with New World ROMs.
I would really like to switch this machine to OS X full time but will
likely
have to run many programs in classic until I can afford to buy all the
upgrades and this is the "main" machine.
After running Xbench hard drive tests I've pulled the UL2D in favor of
my Initio Miles U2W, which had much better disk transfer numbers in
10.3.9. If anyone who's using 10.3 Panther (or later) would like to
replace their UL2D with a Miles2, contact me offlist as I have two more
on hand....

Subject: Re: [G] Anyone using an ATTO UL2 with 10.3?
I am currently using an ATTO UL2 with 10.2 as a bootable system disk.
With 10.3 I recieved very poor disk performance results so I went back
to 10.2. Officially ATTO does not support the UL2 controller with
anything higher then 10 or 10.1. I sent an e-mail to atto support
regarding the poor 10.3 performance and they told me to buy a new ATTO
controller.
They did send me copies of all the available firmware for the card. If
you email me directly I will send you the firmware files.
One catch with my atto scsi controller - If i restart with a
APPLE-OPTION-P-R it will not find the boot disk and the mac (blue&white
Rev 2) will startup with a flashing folder. I have to start with a Mac
OS 9 CD and select the ATTO SCSI drive as the boot disk.
Thanks, Brian - that closely parallels my own experience, and probably
sums it up a bit better than I did.
Also, for anyone with broadband internet who can handle large-ish email
attachments: I have a folder of the latest ATTO updaters - anyone
interested just contact me offlist and I'll attach a copy to my reply.
