Tom,
Before you take this potentially unnecessary step, have you tried
cleaning the eye of the drive? I've worked with tons of cdrw's & dvd
drives. One of the biggest causes of people discarding perfectly
working drives is that there is a tiny spec of dust sitting right on
the laser eye.
All you need to do is take a can of compressed air using the straw on
the nozzle, open the tray, carefully positioning the can and straw
close enough without causing the tray to close, and blow air
back-n-forth across the eye. The eye is generally somewhere 'near' the
middle and slightly below tray level. The one thing you want to be
careful of is to not freeze the eye with the liquid gas. A new can or
tipping the can can cause this so do a test spray to see the condition
of the air.
You didn't give a clear picture of what the drive was doing but
'dysfunctional' made it sound like a good candidate for dust bunnies.
Hope this helps you and others.
Dave
I have a Sawtooth with a dysfunctional DVD drive and need to replace
It, but
can not see how to remove the original drive to put in the new one.
Any help
would be appreciated.
It has both a DVD drive and Zip drive!
Tom
