Thanks Danielle, Johns and Tim,
I am thinking about cable but can't yet. And I have
unplugged it at
first once in two weeks, then once a week, once every two days, every
day. Now, I'm lucky if I can get it to work ever. Ah, where's fiber
optics when you need'em:-) Well, none-the-less I'm still looking for
a
better DSL modem so any ideas,( besides going to cable, which is a
good
idea, just not viable,) would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Anand
Missed this thread earlier but sounds like your having to reset "turn
off wait and turn back on your DSL modem" because its losing
connection and then wont reconnect. I had that problem where I lived
before. Turned out to be the wiring in the house even though it tested
fine by the phone co. I ran a separate wire out to the box on the side
of the house for the DSL modem and never had a problem again.
Hope this helps.

When I had NorthPoint DSL before they filed for chapter 11, the
installer refused to use the house wiring. He installed another
connection directly from the POP (Point of Presence) because all of the
installed wire was "Cat 1" wire. This is very low grade wire with a
very low twist ration. ADSL doesn't need "Cat 5" wire but most home
installed wire is "Cat 1" and has a lot of junction points, especially
if there is more than one phone outlet in the home.
Of course SBC bought NorthPoint and they won't install ADSL because I'm
18,000 ft. from the Central Office, but NorthPoint didn't have any
problem. As best that I can remember my down-link tested somewhere
around 121kbs and up-link was somewhere around 80kbs which was just
fine with me. SBC won't install if your more that 7,720 ft. from the
office. So I have to have comcast for $49.00/month where those that
have Yahoo/SBC ADSL only pay 12.95/month.
