Do I need to up my RAM too? Or should I content myself with 10.2.8?
Panther and up bootup faster and feel smoother than Jaguar. I'm
currently
running 10.3.9 on my B&W G4/600 and it's great. I feel it more
responsive
than Jag. As for RAM, going for at least 512 will make things run
decently.
Second, I would like to replace or augment my CD with a DVD (not
sure
what kind) so that I can burn/share family DVDs off my digital
camera.
LaCie seems to have a pretty good one, but would welcome advice to
cut
through the marketing hype. This site has recently offered a
different
one. Do I replace the internal drive with a new one? Do I go the
external route? Are there software dimensions to be aware?
First go internal. As for the make of the drive, your best bet is to
check
out http://www.xlr8yourmac.com . They have the database for all
types of
drives (you can also specify which system you have as well in order
to get a
more system specific outlook) and it includes user comments regarding
compatibility and problems to look out for. With Patchburn, most
drives
work flawlessly in the Mac. Oh, if you are going internal make sure
your
drive is bootable. I have used Yamaha and Sony CD-RW's and LG DVD
writers.
I have found all to be quite compatible with my B&W. I am currently
using
an LG DVD writer that I got for $99 CDN about 1 year ago. Knock on
wood, it
works great.
The Pioneer DVR107 is supposed to be a goodie.

You can get the Pioneer DVR108 from ecost.com right now for $12.00,
which of course is the the after rebate price.
It's under the brand name Yamakawa DVR-Y08, however it's the same as
the Pioneer DVR108, check it out!
