Thanks to all who replied. I found the cure by accident, but will hang onto the suggestions for future reference!

As I responded to one helpful listee:

I was going to post this last night, not that long after I posted the problem, but it was late & I wanted to go to bed and forgot... but as a last attempt I tried merely shutting down, then restarting. And there the darn 9.1gb was! This morning I remembered that I had a freeze yesterday and has to push the restart button... that's probably what made the drive "disappear". As to HOW it did it...?
